Relationship to QCHI: QCHI Project

Project Description: The Wellness Champions support Quad City residents in making healthy choices regarding nutrition and exercise. 

Target Audience: All residents of the Quad Cities.

Start Date/Current Status:  The project team assembled in December 2002 and created a collaborative plan for action.Team Workgroups are tasked with implementing the plan for the benefit of all the residents of the Quad Cities.  The team originally used the name Wellness Warriors. 

Project Goals and Objectives:  

Long Term Goals: 

  1. Decrease % adults with high blood pressure
  2. Decrease % adults with high cholesterol
  3. Decrease % adults and children who are overweight or obese

Short Term Goals:

  1. Increase # adults and children who engage in regular daily exercise
  2. Increase # adults and children who eat daily nutritious meals
  3. Increase # adults and children who receive regular screenings for health risk factors

Project Performance/ Accomplishments:

  1. Began a community-wide education campaign “Choose Health. Live Well.,” focused on encouraging healthy living including the development of key media messages, a directory of healthy living, a speakers bureau, and a healthy dining guide
  2. Organize annual Quad City Participants in Moon Walk 
  3. Sponsored “The Human Body” IMAX Movie
  4. Partnered with Rock Island County Health Department to create a church-based wellness program at Greater Antioch Baptist Church
  5. Partnered with Hy-Vee Food Stores for the launch of healthy food workshops
  6. Received 2005 IDA Gem Award
  7. Partnered with Martin Luther King Center in Healthy After School projects
